Household electricity bills are on the rise, and will only increase. It is expected that in the next few years the average Australian household will be paying $2400 per annum in electricity bills. The good news is that there are things you can do to make sure you aren’t out of pocket the next time you receive a bill. We’ve put together an easy to-do list that you can do to make sure you save on your next electricity bill!

Use energy-saving light bulbs

Look to LED. Lights make up 30% of your average electricity bill. Compact Fluorescent Bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, but get this, LED lights save another 80% on your CFL and Halogen lights! LED lights do not contain mercury and do not create heat, saving you on cooling costs. It is a no-brainer to switch to LED; they last 10 times as long as other bulbs and can you save you a ton.

Apply this to appliances

Australians can save $29 million and reduce 200k tonnes worth of emissions just by using high EnergyStar rated appliances – the equivalent of 40,000+ cars off the road! And 75% of these are used by appliances that can be turned off or unplugged. So in short, buy high EnergyStar rated appliances and unplug it if you’re not using it.

The bathroom

Look into installing solar hot water systems to power your bathroom. They will save you money in the long run. Also, make sure all your windows are sealed tight so you don’t lose heat, keeping you warmer for longer.

If you’re looking to install a hot water system, have it close to the taps, and make sure you have shorter showers with an efficient shower head so you don’t spend too long in there.

Sealing and insulation

Outside air coming will obviously make your place cold and it is far better to be over-insulated than under-insulated. If you live in one of the two extremities – a very cold area or very hot area – then maximising the best insulation will reduce energy costs by a long margin, especially if your place is old.

One effective technique is checking your windows. Air can escape from windows that do not seal properly or windows that are too thin. Double gazing and super windows with multiple layers of film are just some of the options for maximising insulation in window areas.

Solar systems are probably one of the most effective ways to save on your energy bills. The upfront costs might be high but the returns are worth it. You can sell your energy back to the grid, save money, and help the environment.
